Spring 2010

Dear Volunteers, Spring has finally sprung and we shall start mowing after Easter, much to the delight of many volunteers!

Dear Volunteers, Spring has finally sprung and we shall start mowing after Easter, much to the delight of many volunteers!

1. We now have a regular group of gardening volunteers on Tuesdays, including the Petty Pool team (Lisa, Emma, Sarah, Andrew) and Kate, Peter and Brian.Wonderful work has already started, including the redesign and planting of a small back garden of Mr Stan Bailey, who has generously given his time and skills in repairing a potting bench and making new tool racks for the garage. On Wednesday Clive brings Gareth and Adam and Dean from Petty Pool and together we are tackling a couple of very overgrown, litter- strewn gardens.

2. Total People are almost ready to start work in 4 gardens at Northfields bungalows.

3. David Chambers [independent volunteer] has readily taken over the care of Mr Hughes and his garden in Overfields.

4. We now tend 40 gardens and receive new referrals on a weekly basis.

5. Peter Ford is due to start his National Certificate in Amenity Horticulture at Reaseheath College in September and the modules will be assessed "on-site" by a visiting tutor. Any other volunteers interested in accessing free training please see Bridget.

6. Those who volunteered with National Trust in January and February enjoyed some woodland work at Finlow Wood and Daniel Morris wood, thinning trees, winching out roots and grubbing rhododendrons. It is hoped we can repeat the joint working experience next year. Learning new skills in a different environment with the support of Tim and Julia [NT wardens] made it a happy and productive experience. We also have 2 new people from the local YOTS team who worked hard, joining in with Grow volunteers.
